Introduction to Ashtanga Yoga: What to Expect in Your First Class.

So, you’ve decided to try Ashtanga yoga. Perhaps you’ve heard it’s a disciplined, breath-driven practice that builds strength, flexibility, and focus. Or maybe someone told you it’s like a medieval boot camp disguised as a spiritual pursuit. Either way, welcome.

Your first class will likely be a Mysore-style session, where everyone practices at their own pace under the watchful eye of a teacher. Don’t expect music, dim lighting, or gentle encouragement. Instead, you’ll be guided through a set sequence of postures, which you’ll slowly memorise over time, you’ll be surrounded by people breathing heavily which seems odd at first, and kind of like you’re at a nuisance callers convention, it is in fact Ujjayi breath control! Your teacher will adjust you, correct you, and possibly give you a look that says, really, that’s what you think a downward dog is? But don’t worry—it’s all part of the process.

The room will be warm, and not just because of the heating. Ashtangis generate their own internal fire (or at least a lot of sweat), so embrace the idea that within 20 minutes, you may look like you’ve been caught in a monsoon. If you survive, you’ll leave feeling energised, clear-headed, and slightly smug. After all, you’ve just taken your first step into a practice that could last a lifetime—or at least until you can comfortably touch your toes.

Curious? Come along and give it a try. Just remember: it gets easier. Well… sort of..
